Inspired by South American textiles. Little silver suns are adorned with stacks of turquoise, apatite, and purple ruby. For the modern bohemian. Handmade Shepherd hook earwires. Measure about 1 1/2”. Sterling silver, which has been oxidized and hand polished for an antique finish.

About Turquoise:  The name turquoise means "Turkish stone" because the trade route that brought it to Europe came via Turkey. Turquoise is a non-translucent stone of which the most valuable specimens are robin's egg blue or deep-blue azure.  It also comes in brown, yellow, and many shades of green. The veins are inclusions from nearby rock fragments or oxides that form during the creation of turquoise.

Turquoise, the gemstone worn by pharaohs and Aztec kings, is probably one of the oldest gemstones known. Native Americans and many of the Indian tribes in Mexico used turquoise for currency, and the stone is still associated with the religious rites of the Navajo. Because it remains fashionable, turquoise is quite highly prized, although it is fairly plentiful.

About Apatite: The color of apatite is similar to beautiful tropical waters.  Apatite is actually the mineral that makes up the teeth and bones of all vertebrate animals. The name comes from the Greek word apate, which means, "to deceive." Apatite was often confused, therefore "deceiving" many, with some of the more valuable gems such as tourmaline, olivine, peridot, topaz and beryl.  Apatite's history with humans is long, yet surprisingly vague. While the stone has been associated with appetite suppression for centuries, few other traditions are known. Give in to the inspirational qualities of the Apatite crystal stone and encourage a peaceful respite from the confusion that comes from adulting in the modern world.

About Rubies: The birthstone for July, the ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. Historically, it has symbolized love and passion, considered an aid to firm friendship, and believed to ensure beauty. It can range in color from purplish or bluish red to a yellowish red, but the finest color is a vivid, almost pure spectral red with a very faint undertone of blue. The ruby is a very brilliant stone and is also a very hard, durable, and wearable stone.

FAQ

What is this jewelry made of?

I use quality sterling silver, 14k gold fill and 14k gold.  Occasionally I throw in some bronze, copper or brass.  I use all natural gemstones, some have been treated to enhance color.

About 14k gold fill: 14K gold filled wire is a professional jewelers grade wire. Gold filled wire is not plated. It is a tube of solid 14K gold mechanically bonded to a brass or silver base. There is 100 times more gold in gold filled than in gold plate wire. This layer of gold must be a minimum of 1/20th of the total metal weight to be called gold filled. The color looks exactly like 14k gold. It is tarnish-resistant, safe for sensitive skin and unlike gold plate, it will not wear off. It is a great way to enjoy affordable gold jewelry.
