Autumn goodness. Warm Madeira citrine, rich garnet, and dreamy green kyanite are stacked together. Dainty yet inviting. Leverback earwires. Measure 1 1/4”. Sterling silver, which has been oxidized and hand polished for an antique finish.

About Kyanite:  The name Kyanite derives from the Greek word kyanos, meaning blue. Kyanite has a deep silvery blue similar to blue sapphire at its best. Kyanite is an interesting gem that was discovered during the nineteenth century. Kyanite is found in mountainous regions in the United States (Montana and North Carolina), Switzerland, Brazil and Myanmar. It was once believed that a kyanite suspended from a human hair could follow the earth's magnetic force. Early travelers sometimes used it as a compass when exploring unknown territories.

About Garnet:  The garnet has a long history of use in jewelry. There is evidence of this stone dating back to 400BC with the Greeks. One of the most interesting uses of garnets was during the early 1890's in India, during a rebellion in the Kashmir territory, when Hanza tribal soldiers used garnets as ammunition to fire upon British soldiers!  Native American healers believed the garnet had the power to protect the wearer from wounds and poisoning, prevent nightmares and cure depression.  Garnet is the birthstone for January. Modern days, many believe garnet to be the stone of commitment.

About Madeira Citrine:  Named for its color's resemblance to Madeira wines.  Madeira Citrine is generally more valuable than the lighter yellow Citrines.  Citrine is a variety of quartz whose color ranges from a pale yellow to brown. Citrine has a long history including being mentioned in the old testament as one of the breastplate stones and served as a protective talisman for medieval Celts and Scots. But it was really Queen Victoria (r. 1837-1901) and her love of all things Scottish, who instigated the fashion for citrine jewelry.

FAQ

What is this jewelry made of?

I use quality sterling silver, 14k gold fill and 14k gold.  Occasionally I throw in some bronze, copper or brass.  I use all natural gemstones, some have been treated to enhance color.

About 14k gold fill: 14K gold filled wire is a professional jewelers grade wire. Gold filled wire is not plated. It is a tube of solid 14K gold mechanically bonded to a brass or silver base. There is 100 times more gold in gold filled than in gold plate wire. This layer of gold must be a minimum of 1/20th of the total metal weight to be called gold filled. The color looks exactly like 14k gold. It is tarnish-resistant, safe for sensitive skin and unlike gold plate, it will not wear off. It is a great way to enjoy affordable gold jewelry.
